PERFORMING MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

I. INSTRUMENTAL DEPARTMENT

PIANO: Pianists must prepare a ten to fifteen minute program representing two periods of music history which demonstrate contrast in tempi, technique, and style.

STRINGS, WOODWINDS, BRASS & PERCUSSION: Instrumentalists must prepare a ten to fifteen minute program representing two periods of music history which demonstrate contrast in tempi, technique, and style.

ENSEMBLE (VOCAL OR INSTRUMENTAL): Ensembles applying for membership must prepare a ten to fifteen minute program of standard repertoire for the ensemble by classical and/or contemporary composers.

ORGAN: Organists must prepare a ten to fifteen minute program representing two periods of music history, one of which will be a major organ composition by J.S. Bach, and which will demonstrate contrast in tempi, technique, and style. Memorization is not required.

ACCOMPANISTS: Accompanists must perform with a soloist from the performing membership of B Sharp, a ten to fifteen minute program of selections, one of which will be a piano reduction of an orchestral accompaniment of a movement of a concerto or aria.

II. VOCAL DEPARTMENT

SINGERS: Singers must prepare a ten to fifteen minute program of selections representing at least two different periods and languages, including Italian and English. The program should include one aria from opera or oratorio. Memorization of the entire program is highly recommended.

III. DRAMATIC READING DEPARTMENT

READERS: Readers must prepare a ten to fifteen minute program which will include selections from Shakespeare or other classical dramatists and a cutting from a modern novel or short story, including description, dialogue, and character work.

IV. MUSIC THEATRE/DRAMA

SINGERS: Singers must prepare a ten to fifteen minute program which will include a ballad or novelty tune from a musical written before 1950 (such as Gershwin, Berlin, or Weill) or a song from an operetta and a “scene” number with complete characterization. A scene partner may be used.

ACTORS: Actors must prepare a ten to fifteen minute program which will include a dramatic or comedic monologue from a play written before 1950 and an excerpt from a modern drama or comedy. A scene partner may be used.

The Performing Membership Chair, with input from committee members who are performing members 

in each specific category, will ultimately decide what selections meet the requirements.
